Lion wrestlers wrap up regular season with wins over Newman, St. Ed’s

The Clear Lake wrestling team participated in a triangular meet with Newman Catholic, Lake Mills and St. Edmond Thursday, Jan. 26.  Both Lion seniors that wrestled that night, Ryan Leisure at 145, and  Kyle Willms at 220, ended their regular season on 3-0 night.

Eric Faught (113) and Braxton Doebel (132) were also undefeated at the meet.

GHV boys climb to No. 6 in 2A ratings with wins over LM, N-P

A pair of impressive wins helped to lift the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys basketball team to number six in the Class 2A rankings released Monday by the Associated Press.

Once the Cardinals (15-1, 12-0) got rolling they never stopped.  The GHV boys routed the Lake Mills Bulldogs (9-6, 6-6) to the tune of 83-54.

Garner-Hayfield-Ventura grapplers wrapped up the regular season by completing in the Top of Iowa Conference Tournament Saturday in Forest City.  The Cardinals finished 12th in the 16-team tourney.  Lake Mills outdistanced the field with 244.5 points.  Runner-up Osage had 162.5.  GHV scored 77 points.

Clear Lake and Garner-Hayfield-Ventura will both participate in the Class 2A District 3 bracket.  Specific contests have not been determined, but the teams are bracketed with Belmond-Klemme, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, Eagle Grove and Hampton-Dumont.

Joyce Elaine Matthies, 84, of Clear Lake, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends Sunday, January 29, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 3, 2017, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 301 S. Main St., Ventura, with Pastor Jesse Burns officiating.  Burial will be at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Dunnell, Minn.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
